A powerful heatwave swept India, Pakistan, southern Iran, and the eastern Gulf countries in late May of 2015, claiming the lives of more than 2,500 people and marking one of the deadliest climate events on record in the region. For many Indians from low-income backgrounds, the heatwave brought extraordinary suffering and devastation. But for Sonu Golkar, the blind son of a daily wageworker in the Forest Department of Madhya Pradesh, one of India’s poorest states, it passed with little notice—not because he was indifferent to the heat, but because, that spring, he was nearly 4,500 miles from home.
